Garden Decor Bird Feeders
Bird feeders are a great addition to any garden. It makes a garden seem more alive when there are animals in it moving around. It’s also fun to sometimes just sit and watch them as they do their thing or listen to their songs. It’s also fun to just see how many different types of birds you can attract to your yard. Birds and animals in general are a great type of “live” garden decor.

Where To Put Them

Bird feeders go well out in your garden. It’s not a good idea to put them up close to your house because lots of times birds will fly into your windows not realizing there is glass and get hurt or killed. You can hang them from trees or other things. I would recommend almost hanging them from a post or pole because lots of times squirrels will try to eat out them as well and they’ll find it harder getting at your bird feeder if it’s on a pole. Also, with birds comes bird poop. You’ll definitely want to be sure that whatever you put your bird feeder, it’s not above something you don’t mind if it gets pooped on.

What To Feed

The types of birds you attract to your yard will depend on where you live and the types of feeders you put up and seeds you put in them. If you want to just attract a general all around set of birds, you’ll want to put up a feeder that contains Sunflower seeds. This will attract Chickadees, Nuthatches, Finches, Cardinals & Grosbeaks, Sparrows & Blackbirds, Jays, Woodpeckers, Titmice, among others… If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend getting just a basic feeder that looks like a clear vertical tube about 3 – 4 inches across, then just fill it with seed and hang it from a tree. If you notice squirrels and things getting into it, there are different ways to combat that like putting it on a pole or getting a special feeder that’s squirrel proof. You could even just get a squirrel feeder and they’d leave your bird feeder alone probably. 🙂 If you want to attract a wider range of birds, you can get more feeders and put different types of seeds in them. Also I would definitely recommend getting a hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds are such amazing animals. They seem more similar to a bee than a bird the way they fly. When you set up your hummingbird feeder you definitely won’t want to use honey or artificial sweeteners for your feeder as these are bad for the birds and can cause mold.

Bird baths are a great thing to stick next to bird feeders. Just not right under them. 🙂 Anyway, it’s really fun to watch a bird drinking or even bathing in water. It’s interesting to me how they actually keep themselves well groomed and clean. You’ll just want to make sure that you keep it clean and maybe hose it down every once in a while if it gets bird poop on it.

Once you get it all set up get a nice pair of binoculars and get ready for some bird watching. It’s fun to keep track of how many different types of birds come to your yard. One thing you’ll want to do is just keep the feeder filled up regularly. Once the birds get used to coming to your yard, if you’re sure to keep the feeders filled, they’ll keep coming back.
